چکیده

As the electrophoretic mobility of a bacterium in a constant environment depends on properties of the surface of the organism, alterations in mobility have been used as a means of detecting changes in the structure of the surface. Changes have been detected in this way during the germination of spores and during the initial stages of growth of the vegetative form (Douglas & Parker, 1958 b), at the beginning of growth in a new medium, during transitions between ‘ smooth’ and ‘rough’ forms (Moyer, 1986), and during treatment with enzymes (Dyar, 1948; Harris, 1958; Douglas & Parker, 1958a, b) or with bactericidal and related substances (Bradbury & Jordan, 1942; Cohen 1945). The purpose of this work was to find whether, and if so at what stage, infection with bacteriophage alters the bacterial surface in a way reflected in a change of electrophoretic mobility.

Effect of Rhizobium trifolii, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Azotobacter chroococcum on Growth and Yield of Crismon Clover and Rice in a Rice-Clover Rotation

Cultivation of legume species as the second crop in rotation with rice and using plant growth promoting bacteria can be a good approach to improve rice production sustainability. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the effect of plant growth promoting bacteria on accelerating vegetative growth of crimson clover (Alborz 1) and rice (Hashemi) yield in a rice-based cropping system. A facto...

Genetic organization of the hydrogen uptake (hup) cluster from Rhizobium leguminosarum.

In symbiosis with peas, Rhizobium leguminosarum UPM791 induces the synthesis of a hydrogen uptake (Hup) system that recycles hydrogen generated in nodules by nitrogenase. A cosmid (pAL618) containing hup genes from this strain on a 20-kilobase-pair (kb) DNA insert has previously been isolated in our laboratory (A. Leyva, J. M. Palacios, T. Mozo, and T.Ruiz-Argüeso, J. Bacteriol. 169:4929-4934, ...

Mutation in the pssA Gene Involved in Exopolysaccharide Synthesis Leads to Several Physiological and Symbiotic Defects in Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii

The symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacterium Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. trifolii 24.2 secretes large amounts of acidic exopolysaccharide (EPS), which plays a crucial role in establishment of effective symbiosis with clover. The biosynthesis of this heteropolymer is conducted by a multi-enzymatic complex located in the bacterial inner membrane. PssA protein, responsible for the addition of glucose-1...

Infection of soybean and pea nodules by Rhizobium spp. purine auxotrophs in the presence of 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside.

Purine auxotrophs of various Rhizobium species are symbiotically defective, usually unable to initiate or complete the infection process. Earlier studies demonstrated that, in the Rhizobium etli-bean symbiosis, infection by purine auxotrophs is partially restored by supplementation of the plant medium with 5-amino-imidazole-4-carboxamide (AICA) riboside, the unphosphorylated form of the purine ...

Sugar-binding activity of pea lectin enhances heterologous infection of transgenic alfalfa plants by Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viciae.

Transgenic alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. cv Regen) roots carrying genes encoding soybean lectin or pea (Pisum sativum) seed lectin (PSL) were inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum or Rhizobium leguminosarum bv viciae, respectively, and their responses were compared with those of comparably inoculated control plants. We found that nodule-like structures formed on alfalfa roots only when the rhi...
